Despite being a star football player at a fancy school, people are always acting afraid of Cade. He knows he has to navigate the world carefully as a tall, black kid. One night, while trying to avoid a run-in with police, Cade finds himself in a strange pawn shop. There, he inadvertently makes a wish- that people will stop acting afraid of him. This wish becomes reality, people around Cade begin to act without any fear. As tensions mount and violence escalates, will Cade find a way to reverse his wish?
This book started out kind of slow, and I really wasn't sure about it. But once it picks up, it PICKS UP. The tension and suspense builds really well, making it hard to put the book down. It's a wild ride that would be great for horror fans.

Cade is one of the only Black students at an all-white school, his father is dying of lung cancer, he lives in a neighborhood that's heavy with gang activity, and he just wants to be a big football star so he can help his family and friends out of their imperfect situation.
After a frustrating day of being racially profiled (also due to his size, he's over 6 feet and a bulky football player) he comes across a pawn shop. He picks up a ring and makes a wish while paying for it - "I wish people would stop acting so scared around me." Turns out wording matters...
He doesn't quite know what's happening at first, but it ends up that everyone around Cade loses their fear. Sometimes it's good, like his friend getting over her stage fright and singing in public, and sometimes it's bad, like his dad allowing his 11-year-old sister to drive him around. And when Cade gets around the wrong people... who have let fear stop them from doing really bad things...
Yeah, this was thrilling, and the parts involving his dad and his family were heart warming. I didn't feel super attached to any one part of the story, but I had a good time with it! I think teens will either hate or love the ending, which is fun. There was also at least two references to his previous works which is fun! The DJ from Spin is mentioned as well as discussion of the "theme park" from The Getaway.
Also there's like no romance which is good for your non-romance readers!

If I’m picking up a YA Horror Thriller , this is what I’m looking for !! the content and themes explored were so well done doing a good job showcasing the theme of fear making the readers aware of the ways fear can sometime hold us in dark spaces .
Cade was such a great MMC 🙂↕️ i love his seriousness for football and being so passionate about it that he’s willing to go thru the struggle of racist classmates and teachers to reach his goal . also love how he is with his family . all he wanted was ppl not to be afraid of him but of course , when you make a deal with the devil , it will be twisted into something you didn’t want .
I loved the ending , very bittersweet but done well .
⚠️ SPOILER ⚠️ I can definitely see this turning into a series of him helping people get out of their deal or even preventing them from entering one . it said he couldn’t reach his dream of pro football but he got a bigger task waiting on him and I’m glad he seen that .
