Absolutely outstanding. I was at the edge of my seat for all of the last couple hundred pages. An exquisite, emotional story of love and loss, with the backdrop of AU Moorish Spain. 

It's very dense, but rewarding and well worth it. I almost gave up after the first chapters, because it was hard to follow all the kingdoms, characters, and religions being introduced. I'm very glad I didn't. The characters feel real and flawed and worthy of love, and their struggles with honor and empire are really emotional. Still blown away. This is the first book I've read by Guy Kavriel Kay, and I'  looking forward to reading others.

One warning: There is A LOT of sexual violence in this book. It feels like it's in the service of the plot, not gratuitous or voyeuristic, but some of it is extreme.
