I have so many feelings about this book. THERE MIGHT BE VAGUE SPOILERS BUT I PROMISE THEY WILL BE SO VAGUE I think I felt different about it during the early chapters and had to fight through it a bit, but once I hit the halfway mark I had to read the rest of it in one sitting (I’m typing this at 1:27 am) because I was so sucked up in it. ok SO at first the time jumping stuff confused me because sometimes it was an actual time jump and other times sav was just talking about a previous semester but there were occasionally consistency things with oh is it about to be winter, spring, or summer break? These confused my sense of timeline and timelines are important to me but I fought through it because I care So Much about Wes. (I’m a nonbinary sociology major who nearly asked people to call me Wesley) Again, at first I thought Wes felt a little underdeveloped and kind of just existed to be a cute romantic interest who Taught the protagonist Something Important. But then I let things develop and what do you know. I became attached to so many of these characters. The biggest complaint I saw before reading it was that certain characters felt like they were just supposed to represent the authors idea of that kind of person in college, and I see that, but also. Just because dialogue seems out of place for you doesn’t mean a group of friends hasn’t said those words verbatim. I felt Savs need to fall back into pretending, to smile even when you don’t know what version of YOU the people around you care about. There’s a journey here that’s not my own but it’s powerful and I’d like to think Sav and I could have been friends. Not a perfect book, but I wouldn’t ask it to be.

“I think we both believed that joy could not exist without us being together, but we’re old enough now to know otherwise. We’re old enough now to know that joy is not dependent on another person, no matter how much we want it to be.”
