More of a Great Lakes Avenger collection than a Squirrel Girl collection, but I was pleasantly surprised about this. I was bummed when they cancelled the new GLA series so it was fun to have more stories with them. It was also cool seeing Squirrel Girl’s rise to super hero status. All the other heroes have mad respect for her! She eats nuts AND kicks butts!

Vastly darker and more disturbing, less upbeat and feminist than the more recent Squirrel Girl books so many of us know and love. SG often serves as an opening 4th wall-breaking narrator who offers trigger warnings, since the Great Lakes team largely deals with themes of death, suicide, depression, alcoholism, and abuse and body-shaming and queer-shaming - none of which are handled all that terrifically.

I'm still giving it 3 stars because there were enough enjoyable and redeeming qualities to the stories. The team is meant to stand out in stark contrast to the well-known characters of the Marvel universe: failure, inaction, and being unremarkable or unmemorable are their defining characteristics. And yet they have a certain charm, and some of their members have quite endearing character arcs.

SG fans will love getting to see how her reputation builds upon being able to single-handedly defeat the biggest, most powerful baddies, all of which is directly made into a point to rub in the faces of whiny fanboys. From memory, she beats Dr. Doom, MODOK, Thanos, Bi-Beast, Deadpool, The Mandarin, Korvak, and Fin Fang Foom (the last three of which are just mentioned but hot really shown). Uatu, the Watcher shows up after she's incapacitated Thanos (right after MODOK, all on the same trip to the store for toilet paper and egg nog) just to verify for the canon that the Thanos seen beaten is the real deal.

Still - do not consider this essential reading as part of Squirrel Girl's collected comics.

I was a little turned off that it was mainly the Great Lakes Avengers since I have never heard of them before, but it was fantastic! I loved it! So many laugh out loud moments!

Definitely considerably darker than the other Squirrel Girl that I've read, but still with the same kind of offbeat flavor that I like.

Unexpectedly darker humor than the more recent squirrel girl runs and the book cover art led me to believe.

3.5. Inconsistent, since it was a collection of different comics, but the GLA miniseries at the beginning and the Deadpool stories were really entertaining.

I will say that North and Henderson have made Squirrel Girl into a much better character; fan favorite or not, she is the weak link of all these stories.

This was arguably the most entertaining collection of comics I've read this year (sorry Hawkeye 2012 I still love you so so much)
Admittedly, there are a lot of things about the GLA/X/I(?) that are pretty problematic. Or at least ... could've been handled more delicately, and I don't know how I feel about the 4th wall breaking interludes. It felt a little like someone was told their story was problematic and rather than changing anything they just added some disclaimers throughout the text. So, that's why I took off a star.

Besides all that, I really loved these character. Squirrel Girl obviously is so iconic and I love her, it was great to see her origin, defeating Doctor Doom, and then her time with the GLI. I also was so excited to get to know Big Bertha, Doorman, Flat Man, and Mr. Immortal! This team of misfits and train wrecks won my heart immediately. I would love to see more content about them, and their efforts to be superheroes out in the Milwaukee area.

Really disappointed the TV show idea never really got greenlit.

I see what you did there, Marvel - You put Squirrel Girl's name in the title of this collection because you know she sells books. Good job - You earned at least one sucker right here who bought it. For those of you reading this review who are fans of what Ryan North has been doing with Doreen in her own title, be warned, while this is the same Squirrel Girl, this collection has a much darker and more adult tone. Still funny, but I maybe wouldn't recommend this for middle-schoolers or anyone not accustomed to graphic comic book violence. Also, please note that Squirrel Girl is probably only in about half of this book altogether, so if you're here just to enjoy Doreen, consider yourself warned. That said, still a funny and enjoyable read as far as the new material that isn't in any of the other Squirrel Girl collections is concerned, just really not what I was expecting or what I was sold by the cover of this collection.

DO NOT let this cover fool you!! This is not the delightful, irreverent Squirrel Girl you've come to know & love! These are the darker Marvel stories that focused more on her teammates and their adventures w/ the Great Lakes Avengers. I've let my young daughters read the others, but this one wasn't suitable for them. Mr. Immortal is a messed up character, and the authors have fun gruesomely killing him over & over.

They're entertaining stories, but not what I was expecting after having read the other Squirrel Girl comics.

Barely about squirrel girl, mostly about GLA. Her first appearance was nice though.
