Honestly, a beautifully composed, digestible, accessible yet profound account of grief. Didion relates her experience in a raw, yet not over/the-top fashion which is both information, and the perfect balance of personal and universal.

I got through this really quickly and honestly loved it.

ohhh didion. the ENDING. this entire book was so grief stricken and i wish i read it sooner. this really let me reflect on how i have processed grief in the past. her hyper fixations, focus on the details, repetitions of certain phrases, and everything else truly highlighted and displayed the grief she was dealing with and made it tangible. i think this is a must read honestly. 4 stars instead of 5 just cuz i feel like some parts were redundant but i think that’s the point also.

I listened to this book on audio on a long car trip. It has been on my "Want to Read" for a long time, but getting to it now seemed like good timing as my family experienced a recent encounter with what seemed like it could have been a sudden cardiac emergency (thankfully not!) That Didion lays out so honestly, fully, and expertly the feelings of navigating through unforeseen tragedy is a service to all. She articulates the experience and thereby helps to ease isolation. Her language is so clear and powerful and her allusions are apt. I will have to get a hard copy so I can refer back to certain passages, which I'm sure I will need as I enter the second half of my century....

it’s odd because i think this book is amazingly well written and super smart and really, really good - and yet I can’t say that I enjoyed reading it, or that I plan on reading it anytime soon…
