I really enjoyed this Baldacci book. The plot kept me interested - as usual he had several sub-plots that eventually came together. I also found his take on this particular "first family" intriguing. Although it is fiction, I suspect the personalities may be somewhat less than "fictional". I also think I prefer the Sean King/Michelle Maxwell books to the Camel Club ones - King and Maxwell seem to be a good balance as lead characters.
Very engaging story and standard fare for the genre, although I think that Baldacci does a better job than most of developing his characters to be multi-faceted. That is particularly true of Sam Quarry in this story.
I don't love the predictability of the storylines and the tying up of all loose ends. And I particularly don't love the King & Maxwell relationship moving in a non-platonic direction. But whatever - I expect that when I pick up a psychological thriller. The book was entertaining though, and that's all I wanted from it.
I listened to this as an audiobook, and I really could have done without the music and sound effects. I like to listen to books and have my own imagination do the work. I don't need it to be an audio version of a movie.
I'm planning to pick up the next book in the King & Maxwell series.

David Baldacci's First Family is a thriller with non-stop action, lots of suspense, and a run-around-in-circles-till-you-figure-it-out mystery in the middle of everything.
When the First Lady's niece, Willa, is kidnapped on her 12th birthday, former Secret Service agents Sean King and Michelle Maxwell are asked to find her, even if they no longer serve in an official capacity. And in doing so, they unravel a secret that's been kept for 13 years, a secret that threatens to tumble the presidency into complete chaos. Figures that those who seek power will do just about anything to get it, and keep it. Regardless of who gets hurt in the process.
First Family was a very quick read, and it was good. It kept my attention, and all the details fit. The big secret wasn't completely obvious, neither was it totally obscured. And it wasn't the only mystery, either. If I say more, I'll be spilling, & I hate spoilers.

Not to bad of a story. Took a little while to get going and then the side story seemed kind of just thrown in.
Great book. Why do people feel it necessary to tell the story in their reviews? That is what the book is for
I loved the first lady less and less the more into the story I got. Arg. A part of me wants everyone to be good people and to only keep secrets for non-selfish or self-invested reasons.
Very well written and narrated. I was enthralled the whole time. I am enjoying the relationship development between Sean and Michelle. I just started The Sixth Man and can't put it down.

When the niece of the FIrst Lady is kidnapped, she calls in private detectives Sean King and Michelle Maxwell to supplement the FBI. Sean had helped her in a previous incident so she thinks he might be able to do more. But he uncovers a web of lies and deceit as they race the clock to rescue the girl.
The first half of the book was good. Sean and Michelle are okay characters and the story moved along. However, the second part completely fell apart. There were almost no likable characters and the plot jumped the shark, devolving into a lot of unnecessary drama, in my opinion. It was kind of a mess honestly. Still, it's an okay beach read.
