It's a Scalzi book so it's got its usual Scalzi components: competent people, assholes getting called out, an attempt at a narrator of indeterminate gender, funny bits, a lot of dialogue, and lots of exposition happening in the dialogue. 

That said, it's a fun romp and adventure. Reads like it would make a killer screen adaptation. Hollywood, please produce this.

This was great, I devoured it in one day, almost in one sitting! To be fair, I was camping, so there wasn't much to distract me, but this was a great light read. 

Scalzi is definitely back to form after the somewhat disappointing Interdependency series. This had some great fantasy/wish fulfillment going on. I could kind of see this getting turned into a film or a TV series.

This book is (in the author's words) "a pop song. It's meant to be light and catchy, with three minutes of hooks and choruses for you to sing along with, and then you're done and you go on with your day, hopefully with a smile on your face." It was a ton of fun to read, and while I knew approximately how the ending was going to go it didn't matter because getting there was more fun than being surprised would have been.

The book is set with COVID as a backdrop for the beginning of it, but the pandemic isn't the main focus of the book and once we get to the kaiju part, COVID doesn't actually matter at all. This is the perfect kind of contemporary fiction for me right now: something that doesn't ignore current events, and yet also legitimately doesn't dwell on them or make me need to remember them. It's a perfect example of escape fiction in all the best ways.
