Three stars. The average of 4 stars for the glorious Crumbness of it, and 2 stars for the ridiculously repetitive and tiresome tales of deceit, rape, murder and vengeance that make up the story itself.

Everyone should read this book without delay. It shines a whole new (human) light on the good ol' crazy Book of Genesis.

Well, it got me to read Genesis. It was eerie to read it for the first time after so much time spent with literature and thus constant biblical references, and after growing up surrounded by cultures that value this book so highly. In that way, it was rather thrilling to read. I also am now able to form my own opinions about the tales. And oh, do I have them.

I love the look on Noah's face when God tells him his plans for the earth. God comes off as a nut case. There is certainly some of Mr. Natural in him. I think the riding of camels is an anachronism (chapter 14), but I'm not sure what an anachronism means in this context. I enjoy reading the comic book versions of Shakespeare's plays, because it is closer to performance, and I don't know why, but Genesis comes off very well as a comic. Its absurdity, primitiveness and humanity are brought out.

Robert Crumb's graphic novel telling the story of the book of Genesis is wonderful. His animation makes the entire text come to life in a compelling way. Most of the writing of the Old Testament is archaic, making it sometimes difficult to actively picture what is happening or being described. Crumb has succeede din making these stories come to life in a new and fascinating manner. And this is coming from a firm atheist. The liner notes at the end are also really interesting and give you soime historical context and background about the various books/chapters of Genesis.

Sorry, the Bible is STILL kind of boring, even with Crumb interpreting it. I feel like reading The Book of Genesis made me a little smarter about certain cultural references, though.
