One of my favorite children's books ever.

This was an utterly charming children's book, given to me by a friend who knows that I love catching up on what I missed as a kid. Although it's over 100 years old, it holds up really well. There are some arguments among the children about traditional gender roles, but it doesn't even feel all that dated because, sadly, we're basically still having these arguments today! I loved all the mischief that the children would get into, only to follow their moral compasses and use their precocious minds to find a way to do the right thing and save the day. I also loved how the author would interject her own little philosophies on life and begin speaking directly to the reader to ask what I thought about it. Really sweet and a wonderful adventure.

Four children's adventures on a railway while their father has fallen into some mysterious misfortune and the mother busies herself with provision for the family. They learn to pull together to ease the burden of worry and find adventure near the train station. As an adult reader, it's a little hair-raising to think of small people near the train, but hey, it's 1906. I love Nesbit's intrusions into the story as an author.

South West Trains were giving this out for free at my station. I've never liked them more as a train company. I am all here for free books.

Anyway this was a really adorable little book. I can't believe I never read it as a kid? I would totally have loved it. It's very sweet and comforting and lovely. I adored Nesbit's narration style, where she writes as if she's someone literally telling you a real story. I've always loved the film (and yes, I always cry when I watch it) and I'm so glad I've finally read the book. It was super lovely.

I just bought this book because I like this collection. But I had no idea what this book was about.
I enjiyed this book so much! I partly listened to the audiobook, which also was really good, the narrator really fitted the story!

Such a wonderful story and full of challenges to talk with kids about. Listened to it on Hoopla with Lina & Janna.
