I really enjoyed the ideas in this book - the queering of the Quran, the questions about being “authentically gay”, the expansion of Islamic tradition to make space for queers - but I didn’t love the style. It’s reads like a college admissions personal statement mixed with a devotional study. given the nod to Stone Butch Blues, I’d hoped for more of a literary memoir. that being said, what the book lacked in literary merit, it made up for in originality of thought and necessity of its message. I can only imagine how valuable it is to young Muslim queers coming of age - to see the possibility promised by Lamya’s journey

I am going to keep this book close to me forever. Such beautiful writing with depth I can only imagine to cultivate in my life. The strength and security in their faith and queerness, the direct and indirect implications of similitude between their faith and queerness, the earnestness in their storytelling. It was all just mind-blowingly joyful to read.
I read the book for a bookclub and we discussed how this book, while being quite dark at times and includes struggles beyond fairness, transcends itself into the category of QUEER JOY. And the reason itself is because of how unshakeable Lamya's faith is for them and how it intertwines with their queerness rather than push them away from it, which is so rare to see or read about for queer Muslim people and other queer people with faith. The book is funny, dark, joyful and very introspective as a reader. It is informative, retrospective and just so well-written. I am in awe.

I really enjoyed this book. I learned a lot about Islam and I loved the way it was structured. I also really resonated with some aspects, particularly the chapter on Yusuf. The emotional landscape felt very similar to me about moving far from loved ones, then moving a lot so having short term friends when very young. It was a pleasure to read and gave me things to ponder
