Didn't enjoy to read this book (it was compulsory) but, on the other hand, I loved analysing it.
So I'm quite balanced about it!

Read because it was referenced heavily in Dumas-fils' The Lady of the Camellias- it's just ok. i often forget french writing is just really dramatic but if i was a guy & my girl cried over a book like this i'd dump them. snooze fest

I thought i wouldn't like it because my french professor recommended it but surprisingly, it was good enough. I would probably have put a lower note if i didn't knew the intention of the author for this book, explained beforehand by my professor.
The story revolves around Manon and Des Grieux's love but also their misfortunes.

It is, a misogynistic narrative from Des Grieux, treating his love like a poor animal who needs help from no one but him. Even if Manon did many mistakes, Des Grieux's love was the main cause, being more like an obsession that ends up in : 1) poverty ; 2) murder ; 3) jail time for both of them ; 4) Manon who is feeling culpability instead of him.

By reading the author's note at the beginning, you can understand that the story was written with this intention and that's genius and well executed, especially at the author's time period.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, perhaps because I didn't realise when I started it that it was so revolutionary for its time. Passionate, oblivious, doomed lovers on what is essentially a crime spree to feed an addiction...it reminded me of Tarantino in a weird way.
