I really enjoyed this delightful book, especially with narration by the author herself.

The structure of the book is partly a local history, based on locations on the Number 12 bus route from Dulwich Library to Oxford Street, partly memoir, partly anecdotage, and partly political comment held together by Toksvig charm and gentle humour.

This was at times so sad I thought my heart would break and at other points so funny I had to laugh out loud in public. The format was exceptionally well done, the narrative felt smooth and logical despite the non-linear structure.

301 pages not 432 pages - had some good chapters and interesting facts

This is so well-written. Sandi has led such an interesting life and is such a thoughtful person -- I loved reading this.

I downloaded the audible copy and listened to this whilst running.

In summary....frickin hilarious. I nearly ran a marathon just so I could listen to more....I think the audible must be so much better than the paper copy as its Sandi herself narrating. Sooo many laugh out louds and relates...boarding school for one. I howled at the part about long handled hair brushes and sitting on other girls beds being banned in case you caught lesbianism ( I was running through a cow field at the time and had to crouch for a wee as I was wetting myself)...
Unfortunately (as my pelvic floor needs some work) I had to stop at 10km - I want to eek this book out ...it was my monthly subscription choice for June 2020.
Anyway...the upshot is that this is very very good ...and listening to Sandi is I suspect so much funnier than the written word.

A novel, enjoyable approach to an autobiography. Sandi tells stories from her past interspersed with lessons from history.
I laughed out loud at some of the tales from the past, cried when she talked about ehr papa and his acceptance of her sexuality and felt outrage at how she has been treated at times.
