I got into the characters after so much trauma and chaos but toward the end it seemed to unravel and the ending was predictable and quick compared to the great build of the story

Deeply silly and predictable, this contains a lot of images that the author clearly thought sounded really cool, and some very weird thoughts on women. I wasn't surprised to see in the afterword that this was her debut.

Why is no one talking about how fucked up this book is in regards to its unnecessary hyper sexualisation of CHILDREN? I don't understand the reason Amma needed to be so young, nor the need for constant descriptions of her body? Would more people be talking about this if the author wasn't female?

I'lll admit the book was an addictive read, but too much of it made me feel icky in the worst way. I wasn't a fan of the casual references to sexual assault and self harm - heavy themes that are at no point explored in any nuanced way. It's as though they were carelessly thrown in to tick the 'edgy' box, which just didn't sit right with me. I appreciate the book is meant to unsettle you and I really have no issues with a darker read. There was just nothing clever or thought-provoking about how these themes were handled. It's also wildly problematic in how it talks about women and sexual assault, which really affected my enjoyment of the book.

In short, I really did enjoy a lot of it and it got me out of a reading slump. However I'm not sure its a book I'd recommend or read again.

The first maybe 30% of this book I found really hard to get into. I didn't particularly enjoy the main character and it wasn't until the book delved into her past more that the book became interesting. Once that happened I did enjoy it. Both twists were very predictable-which is fine- but the ending felt very rushed, especially compared to the rest of the book. I feel like it should have been fleshed out more. I also didn't particularly like how the author described the thirteen year olds in the story. I think that those characters could have behaved in the same way without the author describing their bodies the way she did. (It just felt weird to read.)
