There’s no way not to fall in love with this series and the characters. That said, this felt a little slower than the others in the series and sort of dragged a bit. It’s not that I wasn’t interested in Ashwini and Janvier’s story, I was, and the drama around the vampire/angel literally serially sucking the life out of vulnerable women and girls was compelling and provided action, intrigue and suspense, as well as emotional commentary on what it means to be vulnerable to predators and lack social protection.

This was sad and funny and incredibly uplifting with the love story. As always with this author, the action and the emotion were balanced perfectly. This also touched on themes of serious mental illness and living in fear of a chronic diagnosis. I thought that element was dealt with responsibly  even if it was a painful part of the book. As an additional content warning, this also features a lot of violence against women but the protagonists are working to get justice for those affected.

All that said, after the intensity of the previous book with the war that was fought and the weight of a temporary victory, it felt like a step back not to move that plot forward much.
