Full of acute slights and resonant kindnesses, amid the specter of decline. I'll miss his future work.
While I quite enjoyed the book, I found that the connections between the various parts of the book were not as strong as I would have preferred.
A funny, charming, and ultimately haunting work from the late writer. It's a novel told in verse. Don't let that scare you off. The loose narrative hangs a few character through time and the payoff is lovely.
A deliciously entertaining tale -- told in verse -- that charts the 20th century through loosely interlocking characters. It made me appreciate what a unique literary talent we have lost.
Written in stanzas this book unfolds several connected stories over generations. I always feel that I'm not smart enough to get poetry. But, I did understand enough to see the social commentary and enjoy the honesty of the characters. I like when movies and books follow several people who are connected in the tiniest ways. Little slices of life showing how the world is smaller than we think.
while it is called a novel told in verse, i would characterize it as linked microshort stories. golden gate by vikram seth was brilliant and a complete, rounded story. not ldmdcp. i enjoyed it, but it won't stay with me.
While reading I had to stop and be impressed by the way this book was written--all in verse and yet on subjects one would never expect to be written in poetry.
But my enjoyment was mostly solely intellectual. Other than the impressive writing style, the book was so quick you barely had a world to get lost in.
