It was very nice for me to devote some quality time to reading a longer and slow-paced novel. I liked the way that Cather took her time with Thea’s development and really dove into Thea’s roots in Moonstone. As a person who is experiencing a very similar career path and dream as Thea, I felt very at home in her character and loved the way Cather depicted her “growing out of her hometown”. Furthermore, I love how Cather eventually gave Thea everything she wanted and let her become a world-renowned singer, but showed that she wasn’t necessarily happy (Cather explains this sentiment well in the foreword of my book’s edition). Overall I thought this was a lovely read, even if there were moments that dragged a bit. I will say though, the edition that I read was published in 1915 and has moments of including some very outdated racist language and racial slurs. This took away from the book for me, despite it being common language for the time period.
Moderate: Racial slurs and Racism

Lovely writing, as in all her books. I'm a little tired of the exceptionalist narrative, but at least it's a girl/woman this time. I would recommend if you're looking for some nice historical fiction and lovely writing.

Not my favorite Cather, though there were moments that I truly loved. I felt like it was overly drawn out and the ending left me wanting and disappointed. Interestingly, I actually identified a bit more with the other characters than with Thea Kronborg. Still, Cather is certainly a master storyteller, even if this one did not appeal to me.

Does anyone write as well as Willa Cather? I love every Cather novel I've ever read--and they're all accessible to teens. THE SONG OF THE LARK starts slowly, but gathers incredible tension. It tells the story of a young girl who ultimately outgrows her small, Colorado town. At the same time, like many of Cather's novels, it tells the story of its western setting. On top of it all, it's about promise, and the influences of childhood, and love, and greatness. I've read it twice. I've loved it both times.
