A beautiful story inspired by Slavic fairy tales (particularly those about Baba Yaga) with some great characters you'll remember long after you've finished. It encompasses the themes of friendship, kinship, death and bereavement, the cycle of life and taking charge of your own destiny, accompanied by equally beautiful illustrations.

I love Russian fantasy settings, so I fully expected to enjoy this one, but the protagonist was so willfully selfish, dishonest, and, frankly, idiotic that it was painful to finish this. The writing wasn't bad, I just despised the character. Also, I very much enjoyed The Girl Who Speaks Bear by this author, so if, like me, you don't like pre-teen angst, you should read that one instead!

A coming of age tale weaved around the Baba Yaga myth.
The protagonist enraged me but perhaps its because I suffered a devastating loss recently and I could see so clearly all the stupid mistakes she was making, all the wasted time and cruel words.
A satisfying ending though some of the story could have been developed a bit better.
