This book is fantastic. Marinka feels like a real person, and keeps making choices that as the reader, are painful to witness. It takes her time to learn and grow, and seeing her journey is absolutely enthralling.

I adore the House and I wish I could live in one and be a Yaga myself.

A wonderful story full of imagination but touching on heavy subject matter.

Marinka lives in a Yaga house and helps her Baba guide the Dead. But Marinka is a young girl and wants to make friends and experience life as everyone else does. That's tricky when your house has chicken legs and is always travelling from place to place.

She doesn't want to be a Yaga but has always been told that is her destiny. She tries to take control of her life but the ripples of her decisions make huge waves and Marinka will need to rely on the Yaga community to help her fix her mistakes.

Beautifully written book! Loved the ending especially as Marinka got the ending she wanted where she was a part of all worlds!

DID NOT FINISH

got about halfway through, but I just couldn’t take it anymore. most of the story was just the character crying about not wanting that life, and then regretting not wanting the life once she learns the truth, and then crying more about trying to get that life back while ignoring all the things she had been taught and warned about, all while blaming all her problems on the house. It was understandable, and the writing was good, and I could believe that these would be choices a child would make, but it just wasn’t enjoyable for me and I didn’t want to spend time with the whiny character anymore. I guess I’m in a similar place in my life where I feel regret for the way the world is changing and not for the better, and so if fiction gets too relatable, it’s not enjoyable for me, lol. In sum, the world building was very magical, but it was too angsty for me.

a cute cozy story !!!!

I did like the themes of destiny and determination plus the Russian folklore. Destiny may set but there is room for negotiations when magic + a chicken house is involved.
Spoiler I was very surprised yet gave the narrative realistic maturity that baba does not live/return after all and Marinka does have to fulfill her destiny but she has a say in the matter at least
