Started off great, but then slowly fizzled out. By the end I found it quite repetitive and boring, didn't care at all anymore what happened to the main character.

It's satisfying when a book for kids can manage to tackle big scary ideas like destiny and independence and love and family and death while still being innocent and warm with nothing objectionable. My only complaint is that the bit in the middle where she has to make a bunch of bad decisions in order to figure things out is hard to read - it's just a smidge longer than I can handle comfortably.

The dead come here lost and confused, but they leave calm and peaceful and ready for their journey.

I LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK, the definition of cosy, heartwarming fantasy. I love the world-building, the fantasy system. the fact that the house is alive and has chicken legs AAAAAAA
 
also the character’s improvement is immaculate, I love Marinka. and I can feel how indecisive she is, how she acts like children her age, how innocent and pure her dreams are.
