I loved this! It was so different to anything I’ve ever read before! This is the first middle grade book I’ve read and I was not disappointed! A really beautiful read!
This is a wonderful fairy tale of a story filled with warmth and delightful surprises.
Twelve year old Marinka lives in a Yaga house with her grandmother who guides the dead through the Gate every night. But Marinka doesn’t want to be a Yaga or guide the dead or live in a house that moves all the time. She wants to have friends and be normal. So when she meets Nina it seems all her dreams have come true. Until her grandmother must leave.
All alone, Marinka must try to find a way to bring her Baba home and wrestle with her destiny.
An absolute heart warmer full of exciting twists and learning to be true to yourself

This was cute, but also quite unsatisfying? There was enough to the story that kept me interested, but by the end I felt quite underwhelmed because it lacked the emotional punch I was expecting. The main character doesn't really have any growth and the magic wasn't all that fascinating. The plot itself felt very incohesive and all over the place.

I received this as an eARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
Marinka lives with her grandmother, who is a Yaga, or a caretaker of the dead who helps them cross over into the next life. The house that these two live in is very special, it has chicken legs that move them across the world and is magical enough to alter itself to fit their needs. Marinka used to love playing games with the house, but now that she is older, she wants to stay in one place, make friends, and live a more normal existence. When she meets a boy and his pet, she is desperate to stay. So she begins to break the rules, which creates some serious consequences for the house and her grandmother. When her grandmother leaves, Marinka will stop at nothing to get her back, because she is ready to be the next Yaga or live without her grandmother.
This was a strange, yet interesting novel. It felt similar to Coraline. I found myself liking many of the characters, despite myself. At first, I didn't want to like them, but their humor and desires grew on me.

Zamalo da bude dvojka, ali popravi se malo u poslednjih 60 ak stranica. Očekivala sam više magije, a manje zvocanja sebičnog, tvrdoglavog, užasnog, napornog i nezahvalnog deteta.
