I'm not sure how long I will get to spend with Benjamin, but I will appreciate the time I have. I wish I had appreciated the moments I had with Baba more. Nobody is yours to keep. Nothing is for ever."

i'm gonna start saying that i've always been so scared of losing the friends and family i love and being left only with grief. just imagining it gives me panic attacks and after watching my dog die it only got worse. when i purchased this book i didn't really read the synopsis i just thought "oh this reminds me of howls moving castle must be cute" and "what a beautiful and fun cover!!!!" so i did NOT expect a tale about the journey of death and thunderous grief. and i would also never expect that to be so comforting and calming. by the end i felt like i read this book to soothe my inner child.

obviously i got frustrated and angry at marinka so many times and only halfway through this book i started understanding and emphasizing her. she's strongwilled and a little bit clueless to other people, which leads her to making so many poor choices that changed her and everyone's lives forever. she wanted so desperately to own her own life and destiny, and grief washed all over her in a way that she saw no way out but to lie, decieve and hurt everyone who tried to take care of her.

and if we're being honest her grief didn't start just when baba went into the portal.

i also can't help but love how everyone just understood marinka's behavior a lot quicker than i did. we're taught not to be selfish until we feel guilty for wanting to own our lives. if that lesson comes out too hard it might make you rebel and forget your life is tied not only to you, but to the people who love you.

ngl i too would do anything to cross a death portal and travel to the stars to get my grandma back.

when yaga tatyana told her sometimes we need to make mistakes in order to learn and that she was just happy marinka was home and safe i cried a lil bit. i wish someone had said that to me when i was younger.

anyways it's like when taylor swift said the air is thick with loss and indecision i know my pain is such an imposition now you're running down the hallway and you know what they all say you don't know what you got until it's gone 😭

and im so happy marinka got her happy ending afterall!!!!!!! 🐓🏡💫✨️

Chuyện về yaga, những người gác cổng linh hồn, dẫn đường cho người chết, đưa họ về thế giới bên kia, khiến mình nghĩ đến phim hoạt hình Coco. Và câu chuyện “ngôi nhà chân gà” này cũng có đầy đủ các yếu tố để chuyển thể thành phim hoạt hình mà gần như không phải biên kịch gì thêm.

Cô bé 12 tuổi Miranka được đào tạo để trở thành một Yaga như bà ngoại của mình, nhưng cô lại không thích điều đó mà khao khát thế giới của người sống. Miranka không bằng lòng với việc làm quen với ai đó chỉ một đêm - cái đêm mà họ sẽ được ngoại của cô dắt qua cánh cửa, vào cõi vĩnh hằng - mà muốn có những người bạn thật sự, bền lâu.

Điều đó là không thể vì định mệnh đã buộc cô phải thành yaga, và chưa kể ngôi nhà Miranka sống với ngoại là một cái chân gà, cứ nay chỗ này mai lại “chạy” đi chỗ khác, làm sao mà có bạn bè được.

Ngoại khuyên Miranka phải chấp nhận định mệnh của mình và đừng bao giờ đi quá xa, ở quá lâu trong thế giới bên ngoài. Nhưng dĩ nhiên cô bé đâu có thèm nghe, vẫn làm theo ý mình, và từ đó là bi kịch xảy ra, câu chuyện đến cao trào, có thêm tình tiết mới, vui vẻ, buồn đau, hối hận, căm ghét, cảm động … đầy đủ cả.

Hoàn hảo cho một câu chuyện thiếu nhi và chuẩn như một bộ phim hoạt hình: một nhân vật chính nhỏ tuổi chống lại những gì sắp đặt sẵn để khám phá bản thân mình, dấn thân vào một cuộc phiêu lưu, mang đến cả niềm vui lẫn nước mắt. Sách in ấn đẹp, dễ đọc, có điều quá tuổi với mình thôi.

This was so fun and magical and whimsical. It gave me such wholesome vibes that I was smiling throughout the majority of the book. Sophie Anderson is a master storyteller and I can't wait to read her other books!
