I feel like we only scratched the surface in this book. It has great potential, but it should be longer and dive deeper. I want to know the people better, because the characters in this book could be great, but they’re underdeveloped. Still, a sweet, easy read with the most beautiful illustrations along the way.

Charming story about finding the courage to be yourself, and drawing heavily on old folk tales.
Marinka lives in a house that has chicken legs. It gets up and walks at night, settling where it chooses. It keeps Marinka and her ‘grandmother’ (Baba Yaga) safe as they tend the Gate of the Dead, helping people pass to the other side.
Only Marinka yearns for her own story, the chance to live.
Selfish, but we are encouraged to understand Marinka’s actions, and it was lovely to see her growing confidence in who she is and exactly what that means for her.

A compelling mid grade magical fantasy adventure based on the Baba Yaga fairy tales. An enjoyable read.

This was really nice. The talk about wanting to pick your future, your destiny, the way it dealt with grief and preteen rebellion was great. I truly enjoyed it and look forward to more books from that author.

I read this in less than 3 45-minute reading sprints, and absolutely loved it. Such an easy read, and so heartwarming/wrenching at times. Potentially my favourite middle grade?
