After a few days of trying to struggle through chapters of nothing but dialogue I started skipping ahead and finally DNFed. To be clear, I'm a description and scenery reader, I don't like dialogue, I love great prose, I love seeing scenes in my head.
The beginning was great. For the first 200+ pages I was very much in. I'm down with Dantes's revenge and I'm down with the Count. For awhile he seemed like a rock star.
But when the colossal list of names started blurring together and all the M.s and Mme.s flipped around, and especially when the dialogue got to a point of complete takeover talking about numbers and money and armchair politics, I could not care less. I do not care. I forgot what the plot was. The Count isn't even in it that much anymore, it's just talking heads and people I don't care about. I don't even remember who I'm supposed to hate, everyone is just talking at once in the same haughty huffy tone.
I'm very sure it picks up and gets awesome in the later quarter, and I'm very sure I'm missing a lot by reading an abridged version, but I get the gist and I'm annoyed so I'm stopping.

I really enjoyed this version. I have the classic 'brick' novel and it, to date, intimidates me so much I'll read anything over it. This was a nice way to enjoy a great story, it even gives me confidence and hope that some day I will pick up the brick.

I was glad I read this Alexandre Dumas' classic. I only finished by sheer force of teenage will, but I finished it. It's neat to think that at the time these were written they were like soap operas. It's a classic I would recommend!

I really loved this book. I had originally wanted to read it because it was a classic and one I often heard referenced. I wasn't really sure of what the book was about and had it in mind it was going to be a "guys book" but it's just a very good book. The book I read is the barnes and noble format which has shortened the book and rearranged some parts to make it easier for the reader to follow. This was all explained with endnotes and I feel done quite well, even though a part of me would like to read the original format to see if anything was lost in translation.
All you need to know is this: it starts out as a love story that is torn apart by the jealousy of others. The shattered heart of the one leads him on a path of vengeance to take the happiness away from those who took his happily ever after from him.
