This was my first favorite book and is still a great favorite of mine. It was was quite shocking to read it in English because I originally read an abridged, junior version of this book in Chinese and the endings are quite different. The original, unabridged version is much darker and more satisgying.

I love the themes of justice and revenge and the reminder at the end not to lose your humanity when you pursue those two things. The intricate plotting and strategy and setting the traps are quite amazing.

Thoroughly enjoyed this abridged version of The Count of Monte Cristo. Would love to read the unabridged version at some point in the future.

Second time reading this, and I am so much more sensitive to cheese than I was in high school. Hard to fault a book when it practically invented the melodrama, and it honestly is a rollicking good time, but there are a number of things in here that feel so much weirder than they used to. It was a comfy book to come back to though, even if I’ve lost my taste for revenge. As before, I like the first half better than the second.
