I'll be spoiled for a while when I try to read anything else!

The unabridiged is better. See my review of that one by clicking: [b:The Count of Monte Cristo|7126|The Count of Monte Cristo|Alexandre Dumas|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1309203605s/7126.jpg|391568]

Of course Dumas uses his standard "aristocratic poignancy" throughout the novel which is less than appealing for me, though I understand its importance for Dumas contemporaries. But the novel is still magnificent as a story. Dumas' ability to create plot and subtext is unmatched. He really does tell a riveting story and conflict. That is why this novel is still a must read.

It wasn't until half way through my 441 page copy that I realized I was reading an abridged version. Isn't that cheating? I thought it might be until I realized the unabridged version is around 1300 pages. I'll have to trust that the man that abridged it kept all the important parts. (Is that possible?)

I really enjoyed this book. I think it had more of an impact on me the first time I read it in high school. This time I knew what was coming. However, it still is a great story with an important message and quite a page turner for being a classic. I got sucked right in and enjoyed every minute.

Wow, I forgot how different this was from the movie! I really liked it and enjoyed it this go around, but I can't say that I LOVED it. I don't know why. I'm really really curious about the unabridged now.... but that will have to wait for another time.

That was... wow, that was a lot of book. And a lot of plot. And it raced along wonderfully, everything twining around itself and characters popping up unexpectedly, and a lot of false identities, and I still can't work out if I actually enjoyed reading it or not.

I didn't exactly care for the ending but it's very much a product of its time for that.

Incroyable! Magnifique! Superb! I wasn’t looking forward to reading this for some reason, but I am so glad I did. This is, without a doubt, the best book I have ever read. From Chapter 1 I was hooked and there wasn’t a dull moment in the whole 1200-odd pages. Edmond Dantès is the Sherlock Holmes of revenge. His ingenuity and logic are astounding. There wasn’t a single detail he hadn’t ironed out. Every move, every action, every person he surrounded himself with were all pieces of his puzzle that he expertly and seamlessly fit together. Bravo, Dumas! Bravo!

Written back in the day but the storytelling is timeless!
