It is said to be the worst written classic...and it may be true. But I enjoyed it, most of it, and aside from a various structural problems, I think it merits a read at least once.
I always make a point of watching a movie made from a book *if* I haven't read the book yet. This policy comes from a love of good books and good movies and not really wanting my reading or watching experiences ruined. As usual, I am glad I did it this way, because I love the most recent movie version of this book (Jim Caviezel), and upon finally reading "The Count..." found them almost strangers to each other, and thoroughly enjoyed the book, which depicts a much more convincing journey of a man finding out that revenge is not all that it's cracked up to be.
I read this story in high school. While I don't remember everything about it, I remember enjoying it very much.
I enjoyed the book but I wish I had read the full version.
Probably the best classic novel I've ever read but the ending was so unsatisfying! What happened to Danglars, Albert, and Mercedes? What was that weird ending with the Count and Haydee?
Do I need a new version? Do all of the versions of this book end like this?!

I first read this book when I was in 8th standard. I absolutely loved the children's version and had no idea at that time that there is another version of the book. Until I saw the copy in a glass shelf under the Classics section at a bookstore few years back.
The memories of Dante's story of innocence and revenge rushed back. I bought the book and read it 3 times(two times in a row). A count of Monte Cristo is a historical fiction set in the time of Napoleon Bonaparte. The book is about a successful and happy sailor falling prey to the cruelties of betrayal and jealousy. One moment he has everything he ever wanted and then everything is snatched away. His love, his job and his life.
He is sent to a prison for a crime he didn't commit. A prison where death is the only air one can breathe. Pain, hopelessness and insanity became his friends.
After years of imprisonment, he finally gets a chance to survive. To break the shackles and take revenge. Will he? Well, no spoilers from me!

I will be forever amazed by the complexity of this story. Its almost difficult to wrap my mind around the fact that someone was brilliant enough to write it. The story makes me think of layers. When you think you have come to the end of a part of Dantes' plan, you dig deeper and there is much much more. But everything fit together perfectly, in such a large picture. Dantes got his perfect revenge. No one ever saw him coming, no one could have imagine what he had in store for them.
Edmund got his revenge not by committing any crimes, but by being a petty
A thoroughly satisfying read!
Spoiler
Edmond was such a great protagonist to follow. He suffered and lost everything only to come back with wealth and a thirst for vengeance. It was worth the read to see how his enemies met their due. The heart-wrenching bits where he couldn't love Mercédès the way he did when he was 19 was just painful to read but understandable
I was really reluctant to read this at first but I have to say it is undoubtedly one of the best books I have ever read. Something new happens on every page and it is always exciting and very shocking! Not only that, but the beautiful character transformations and themes in this novel are just truly stunning!!
