A beautifully written, lyrical novel. The past and present are knitted beautifully together to give depth and explanation behind the characters in the novel.

A sad story of how bigotry, self interest and insensitivity can change the course of events and mould the lives of children exposed to it.

The writing is absolutely stunning. However, the non-linear stream of consciousness style of storytelling makes it exceptionally difficult to follow and connect with the characters (of which there are MANY). I imagine that this would be a great novel to study in a classroom setting due to the sheer complexity of the narrative.
