in general i really liked this book! the pacing and mystery really worked for me. i was not a big fan of the
incest plotline at the ending bc i felt like it cheapened estha and rahel's relationship/reduced their intimacy to the sexual...but i also think they were aware of that and that was a part of the sadness of the end.

This is such a Booker Prize book. So unnecessarily wordy and pretentious.
No-one has ever made sex or food sound so disgusting. Also, none of the gross sex descriptions are actually necessary to the story.
I mainly kept going because the narrator on the audio book had such a calming voice.

The writing style is absolutely gorgeous, and Roy handled the themes with the painful beauty of the scars they leave. I would give 5-stars if the descriptions weren't so wrapped up in metaphor that it's difficult to understand what's actually happening.

Roy will sacrifice story-telling to show off how masterful she is at writing. If you want to read this book for the plot, themes, or sociopolitical commentary (and you’re as bad at reading as I am), you might be better off reading a plot synopsis. If you don’t mind a challenge and you’re capable of appreciating poetic and complex writing for the sake of itself, then this book is totally worth it.
