Excellent book with an interesting plot but it all gets a bit lost in the weeds having to juggle so many characters.

I am interested in the stories of native people. I am curious about their culture and experience. This novel gave a unique peak into facets of these topics. The characters feel honest. The story-telling clipped—perhaps representative in style and form.

A cast of many characters that all comes together in the end at a powwow in Oakland, CA. This was an intense read that showed the lives of Native Americans living in modern America.

Great storytelling and engrossing characters. Loved that this was set in Oakland, and provided the often overlooked perspectives of urban Natives. It's a little hard to keep track of all the characters and their plot lines on audio but a great listen nonetheless.

This is a clever book, connecting a wide range of characters in interesting ways. It paints an unflinching picture of growing up Native American in Oakland: of struggles with identity, connections to family and intergenerational grief. Orange is a natural writer, who does dialogue so well. I felt I learnt a lot from this book and look forward to reading more of his work.
