ok the reviews on here do NOT reflect this book. i read them and so i went in with low expectations and wow mcbride went above and beyond those expectations. i loved the cast of characters, the world building, and the way that the characters were treated with dignity despite their circumstances. i did find the plot a little hard to follow at times, but the writing was witty, entertaining and very very insightful about this thing we call america. definitely an author i will be returning to. a great read!!!!

I wanted so badly to like this book, and there were parts of it that I absolutely loved. However, there were too many characters, all with their own complex backstories for any growth or development to occur. I found that this made the story quite slow and boring.

The book was able to capture the full scope of a neighborhood in a snapshot. But sometimes the plot meandered more than it needed to, and we didn’t really need descriptions of so many female character’s breasts.
