This was a confronting book, it didn't shy away from the horrible. How can I rate a book, saying that I liked it when the content of the book is disgusting. Precious Jones has lived a hard life, and so have many other people in Harlem.
I've been told that the writing style is hard to get used to because Precious can't read or write so it's written in slang etc. I'm glad I listened to this on Audio book because I didn't have to struggle with the writing.
This isn't the book for everyone, but I'm glad I read it. Now to see what the movie is like...

Fascinating book on growing up in NYC with an abusive "family." Heartbreaking to read at parts and definitely graphic at times. I just can't believe that some people out there (probably more than I can even imagine) live through similar experiences every day!
This is not a heavy read nor is it very long; however, the author wrote it phonetically and from the point of view of someone who is just learning how to read/write. I found this completely frustrating given my background in all things linguistic, but it was worth the effort! Looking forward to seeing the movie at some point - not sure which counselor/social worker/etc Mariah Carey is going to play and if she's actually believable...

I didn't really want to read this book; however our f2f book-club wanted to. I could tell from the previews of the movie that this wasn't going to be an easy read as far as the topics. It was an easy ready as far as it was quick not very long. The subject is intense... but the character is interesting Precious becomes more herself as she learns to read and write. She has a voice and she eventually learns to use it.
