Fascinating to see these characters in their formative versions. The story is sparse and somber, a very classic "danger, toils, and snares" fairy tale which has the characters hopping from one strange situation to the next. The illustrations in this book are stunning and energetic, and in some ways are more captivating than the illustrations for the later books.
