This is a well-written story and definitely interesting. HOWEVER, this book is not a mystery. Sure, there are a lot of unanswered questions, but the book is about the characters and their pasts. This novel does not offer a mystery that needs to be solved and therefore I would consider it fiction. With that in mind, this book was a very good example of fiction. It had gorgeous writing but sometimes descriptions could go on for a little too long. I found myself hoping for it to end at some points. Definitely worth the read, but check content warnings!!

This is the first I have read from this author and I really enjoyed it. The mysteries surrounding the area and the people there were just enough to keep you going.

I voluntary read an advanced copy from Netgalley.

This isn't the sort of book I normally go for, but I'm very glad I did. It's a very difficult story to read in places and anyone who would feel triggered by descriptions of domestic violence should probably avoid it.

So many stories in one

The domestic violence is always hard, be warned. The mother/daughter stories and the orcas had me in tears. Then the other characters and their tales so fun!

This was a fantastic read, and now I'm slightly obsessed with learning more about orca whales. This was very well written, and easy to get into. I'm only sorry I didn't make time for it sooner.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a much appreciated digital copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review.

This was a bit less of a thriller than I’d hoped for but it was still an interesting, well-written book.

There's a lot I liked about this book. It felt very authentic to small town island living with the gossip balanced by a supportive community. Hall captures how protective and concerned locals feel about Orca whales and their struggles to thrive. The individual characters were well drawn each with their private stories. My only quibble was some confusion in keeping them straight. Oh, and the dark winters are accurate, but it doesn't rain nearly as much as it does in Seattle. Four breaching stars
