The Carrot Seed

3.8 AVERAGE

Kind of so-so for me... I guess it's overall a story of faith in yourself. I like the illustrative style.

A sweet simple story about persistence.

Simple, straightforward story about having faith and persevering. The little boy is surrounded by those who think his seed won't grow - and for a while it looks as if they may be right - but he keeps on keeping-on, weeding, watering, and watching until the seed sprouts and the world's largest carrot appears. Little touches like the parents saying "I'm afraid it won't grow," while the big brother says "It won't grow" add a dose of reality. My three-year-old loved it.

This book is great to show hope and patience (and gardening), but the pictures leave a lot to be desired.

4.5/5

A cute children’s picture book about a little boy and the carrot seed he plants. It is about patience, perseverance, and faith in the underdog. Loved the concept / story, but wish the illustrations were more colourful. Perhaps they will do an updated edition!

I adored the illustration and that it was short but the story lacked details that left even my three year old with questions of how and why.

A boy plants a seed, a carrot seed. For some odd reason his family all keep telling him it will not grow. The point of the story is that the boy believes it will grow and at the end, he is right. I think this is a strange little story. I enjoyed the art colors, it looks sort of like a comic strip from old. It is short and sweet and a fun book for beginners. I can see many confusing messages, but I guess an ok one is that trust plants will grow, they take time.

The nephew laughed when the carrot did grow. He thought this story was weird, he said. He gave it 2 stars.

Boring!

Not to mention the kid's whole family is just horrible to him. That's not an example I want to give my preschoolers. Also, the dad is smoking a pipe the whole time (I realize this might have been no big deal when the book was originally published in 1945, but as a responsible adult in 2018, I choose to only use books with my preschool crowd that model such behavior as being okay if the book is 1) spectacular and 2) the message cannot be taught any better with another book. The overall message of this book is don't give up even when other people dump on you. There's a ton of other books that teach perseverance far better than this one.)
I won't be using this one at all, NOT recommended.

I appreciate the power of the simplicity of this story.

This book has a simple story line with pictures without much color. Although the book teaches that with patience and care things will happen that are unexpected by others. Patience is a virtue that children need to learn and this book could be used to try to help explain it to them.
