man i am SO happy that i got to read the lord of the rings and love all these characters and their struggles and appreciate the crazy lore and the themes of hope and camaraderie and woooww this story is just. everything. we will never have anything like it again.

addendum 1: the scouring of the shire is fucking great. this is where the hobbits' journey comes full circle and you get to see how much they've changed because of the war!! also merry is a badass

addendum 2: i read the appendices and that shit felt like it was real history

Bittersweet and lovely, as always. I'm always conflicted about whether or not I like the third book as much as the others, but this time, the story hit just right.

This time around, I found the scouring of the Shire chapter to be vitally important to the point that Tolkien is trying to make with this saga: what point is yearning for home if you cannot protect, tend, and maintain it? Anyway, the end made me cry again.
