This is definitely the book from which the movies diverged the most.

It was nice to see more of the story after the war ended, with the Hobbits going back to the shire for multiple chapters. It felt a little jarring as far as pace and stakes are concerned, but I enjoyed that extra time with them.

Now that the story is concluded, I found that the characters of the Hobbits & Gandalf were brilliantly done, but it felt as though Legolas, Gimli, & Aragorn were pretty one dimensional.

Without getting into spoilers, I also appreciated seeing the end to some of these characters that weren’t shown in the movies.

Overall, I’m very glad I finally marked this trilogy off my TBR. I really loved these books overall & it’s an experience everyone should have in their lifetimes.

It was just amazing to read each one of the books. Never thought I was going to tear a little until I was reaching the end of this one.
Such a long journey with so many experiences and you just feel the characters have been through a lot to have such a memorable ending

My husband & I spent the last 2 1/2 years taking turns reading The Hobbit & all 3 books of this series to each other periodically at bedtime. I had never read them & he wanted to share them with me. It’s been a great adventure. The experience of sharing them was 5 stars even if the writing wasn’t always 5 stars for me.
