not as good as the first two installments, but still vintage Tolkien.

What an incredible end to this trilogy. All plot lines and character arcs are concluded in the most satisfying way imaginable - there were things I didn't even realize I wanted that fit so perfectly in the narrative I can't imagine the story being complete without them now. I do not have a single complaint about this book, and loved returning to threads and people I thought were finished up in the previous books or the beginning of this one. Tolkien honestly delivered this conclusion (and the entire trilogy) so well that I found myself stuck between wanting to read as fast as possible to find out what happens and forcing myself to set the book down to prolong the inevitable end. I will absolutely be re-reading these sometime in the future, and this world quickly finds itself on the list of my all time favorites. I am only upset that I will never get to experience the first time reading these again.

Taking half a point off because my beloved Samwise Gamgee is completely absent from the first half. These books really are just as good as everyone says they are.

Samwise Gamgee’s #1 fan

This trilogy is the greatest thing ever written and it doesn’t even come close

Overall a very good book, but I think I like Two Towers better.
Eowyn is a greater character except for her ending, the fact that even she uses the word “tamed” just rubs me the wrong way. Obviously a small part of the book but so far that’s the most annoyed I’ve been while reading Tolkien.
