I am of the opinion that we come into contact with art when we need it and when we are able to give to it what it needs and it’ll give us what we need. This book had been in my list to be read forever and having read it at this point in my life just proved that I was right in my belief I previously described.
All of the emotional beats of this book hit so well, be it the sad, depressing moments or the hope it inspires. As a lesbian, this made me love, hope and despair all in equal amounts.
I don’t know if I’d say this is a read for everyone, but it was certainly an amazing read for me.

4.5/5. i cried so many times while reading this. this is a book that everyone who is part of the community should read. even allies. it's a very hard read in terms of the graphic content, but i appreciated it nonetheless — it's so, so important to remember the people who came before us and what they had to go through in order to bring about progress.
"Stone Butch Blues is a bridge of memory. The immense human toll of the AIDS epidemic, and of oppression as a whole, have created a gaping chasm; virtually generations lost. As a result, the history of social movements and their lessons are episodically recalled.
Recovering collective memory is itself an act of struggle. It allows the generational currents of the white-capped river of our movement to flow together—the awesome roar of our many waters."
This was an incredible read. Such important messages for all of us queers. My only regret is not reading it sooner!
