there is something so beautiful about the way that leslie is able to capture the feelings of self-discovery and how gender/sexuality change your views of the world. through love, loss, and life, leslie tells a story that i know many butches, myself included, feel for. it helped me understand my gender and how it interacts with my sexuality. it helped me learn more about what it means to be a butch in this world, and while the circumstances are different, there are still so many ways that i connected with this book. forever thankful for leslie feinberg and i hope to make her proud.
Generous, masterful, inspiring, heartbreaking, a gift.

Thank you, Leslie. Your memory is a blessing. I feel a kinship with you, like you’ve been looking out for me and all the other butches from beyond the grave.
I first read this book as a baby butch, and now, a few years into my transition and happily T4T married, I understand it much better and feel it even more deeply. The questions raised and conversations had in this book about community, identity, hope, and activism are still scarily— at times depressingly— relevant. In telling the story about deep loneliness, Feinberg transmutes that loneliness into a kinship and solidarity with all of us who have felt the same way. This is essential reading not just for lesbians and/or transmascs, but for everybody. These words are good medicine.

one of the most important and influential books I think I’ll ever read- I will never stop thinking about this and guarantee it will be so influential over my worldview.
the amount of times I cried over this was too many to count.
