What a stunning work of fiction. Butch/femme histories must be told and known and felt in as many ways as possible to share the spirit of self determination that defines these communities.

It is easy to see why this book has been so heavily recommended over the years. Beyond being a primer for so many foundational concepts, it's simply a good novel.
I feel enough has been written about Stone Butch Blues and Leslie Feinberg, I really don't have much more to add besides my own recommendation. You can get it for free on Leslie Feinberg's website, so you don't even have a good excuse for not having a copy of it.

Read this for a bookclub that I wasn't able to attend in the end and am so glad to have finally read this. Why did it take so long. Lot of reflecting coming in on this. Can't ever truly comprehend how much people withstood before us to be where we are now. How much I owe to people like Leslie. The writing itself is clunky at times but there is an ever present knowledge that these heartbreaking and horrific scenes are written by someone who lived through all of this and made it to the other side, and got to a place to record this all for posterity. (Yes its fiction but it's a very thin veneer on Leslie's real life). And that made it easier to get through.
god this book is the greatest gift i have ever been lucky enough to receive. i don’t have the words to describe how moved and emotional and changed i am after reading this. wow butches and femmes have all my love always and forever

This was so profound and uncomfortable but so so important. I cried through most of it to be honest and especially reading Leslie Feinberg’s afterword from 2003. “What has been won what has been lost” she asks and I really don’t know the answer but it’s all I can think about.
