at times hard to get through because there is just so much violence and admittedly feinberg's writing style is maybe not that spectacular. still i found myself tearing through this pretty quickly. an authentic and important insight into lesbian and trans lives in the 20th century. despite all the pain and the terror there is still so much love and community and hope in this and it's especially nice to read this with hindsight, knowing that thanks to the movements depicted in this book a lot of things have changed for the better by now (even if right now they are taking a turn for the worse again.... at least this shows that we can turn it around again). rightfully considered a queer classic.

One of the best resources for understanding historical strife within the queer community—strife and exclusion that are still alive and present in today’s community but under different terms and umbrellas. I have before understood the weight of the terms “butch” and “femme” and how UN-lightly they should be used.
