A landmark piece of queer literature and a must-read for queers everywhere. It changed the way I view my own gender and presentation in a fundamental way that has literally changed my life. Excellent book.

Easiest 5 stars ive ever given. This may be my new favourite novel of all time actually.

Listened to it which definitely ruined it partially omg I HATED the narration

I feel like I've lived a whole nother life through reading this book. A life somewhat similar to what I might have experienced had I been born 70 years earlier. I laughed and cried and lived alongside Jess, and now that it's over I don't know what to do with myself. The prose in this book is simple yet often devastatingly beautiful, with some lines that cut like glass and others that feel like coming home. This book broke my heart and put it back together again too many times to count. What a wonderful testament to the joy and pain of being different.

there is a life before reading this book and there is a life after it

Stone Butch Blues has immediately catapulted to my top 10 books of all time. It's an incredible portrait of humanity, especially those who are marginalised within marginalised groups - the black butch lesbian working class Ed, working class, closeted butch-for-butch Grant. What happens when they try to join unions? The women's movement? The civil rights movement? This book is the story of people who face exclusion and danger even in those spaces. It had me crying at several points. Everyone should know about this book, not just the queer community.

Stone Butch Blues is the (early) life story of a fictional working-class genderqueer lesbian from the 50s to 90s, as they grow up a "masculine girl child", survive police brutality, move jobs and homes, and eventually find the big city before journeying home for the final part of their story. It really is like the blues, as the character rolls through life and grows with it.
