Such a moving and powerful read. It gets dark in several places, highlighting  how difficult life was for people who were different during the 60's and 70's. It makes one grateful to be alive today- and grateful for all the brave folks who fought and died and survived to create the kinder world we live in now. And it makes one determined too, to pass it onward, and continue their fight for the children of today and tomorrow.

The characters are so vivid, so flawed and so beautiful. They feel real. And Jess Goldberg's internal dialogue about gender and sexuality resonates across time and culture in a way that makes one ache.

"I give this novel back to the workers and oppressed of the world."

Leslie Feinberg is soooooo cool....
I don't know what else there is to be said... and Leslie hirself explicitly requests that this book need no introduction. This book is important for recovering collective memory and everyone should read it. So many times it just made me sit back and think about gender, sex, and so much more.
The post scripts of this book are incredible too. Leslie was deeply rooted in an internationalist, communist perspective and while this permeates throughout the novel, the afterword and author notes led me to dive into hir work in Workers World and elsewhere.
Grateful to have had such easy access to this work!

I’ve seen this book recommended several times as a queer classic, and I’m glad I finally came around to read it. It’s incredibly envigorating in its storytelling and how it combats internal struggles with gender. I found myself in Jess many times throughout the book. Using the characters as a way to explain complicated gender topics makes it easier to empathize with their struggles and find a better understand of the fluidity of gender. It was an incredibly fantastic book!

Couldn’t put it down. Exactly what I needed. Required reading for anyone wanting to better understand themselves, their elders, and their future.

“When I came into the bar in drag, kind of hunched over, they told me, "Be proud of what you are," and then they adjusted my tie sort of like you did. I was like them, they knew I didn't have a choice. So I never fought them with my fists. We clapped each other on the back in the bars and watched each other's backs at the factory.”
