I first picked up this book in 2019. I didn’t end up finishing it — I wasn’t ready for it then. Now, 4 years later, a lot has changed for me and so with it has my perception and ability to understand this book. There are many parts of this book and Jess’ story that are relentless and difficult to read as it seems like the punches never stop coming, in both senses of the word. However, an important book nonetheless and a seminal work of queer literature and story. I’m so glad it came back to me at the time it did.

Stone Butch Blues. A book I never expected to pick up last night and a book I couldn’t put down. So intense, I dreamt about it. I will be forever changed by this book.
This book follows the narrative story of Jess Goldberg (which takes large inspiration from Feinberg’s own lived experiences) who navigates her gender nonconformity, sexuality, and place in the world where there is seemingly no place for her.
This is a very heavy read and you should take the warnings of this book very seriously because it discusses horrible violence at the hands of people with black hatred in their hearts.
But it is such a necessary read to see where the LGBTQ movements began and all that was endured to get where we are. While there’s still an insane amount of growth needed in this country, it was devastating to see where Jess started and all that went through.
I’m so grateful to have stumbled on this book and this author. There are some beautiful pieces of prose in this and so many sweeping stories of romance woven into the threads of this story.
Highly recommend if you have an open heart and some tissues nearby. ❤️
No rating on this one because it feels somehow wrong to rate someone’s lived experiences in a star form.
