Despite the first 250 pages being horribly boring, as I kept going it got better. However, I read over half of this novel and it was more effort to trudge through it than dissect its ideas. I see why the book is praised, and I laud Mann for undertaking such an endeavor. But for me, it feels like too much effort for rather little pay off. Maybe one day, when I have infinite time to devote to reading long and winding passages of ideas, I'll love it. But today is not that day.

This was my top read of 2023. Absolutely fabulous. John Woods is a marvelous translator, and the audiobook narrator, David Rintoul, is unbeatable.
