This book tackles an important topic. I wish everyone (also men) read it and became more aware of the weight many of us carry. However, for me it was not a transformative book. Let me explain..

I have consciously and unconsciously thought and worked on much of what is discussed, and although it was validating to see my thoughts confirmed, and a good reminder to continue putting in the work, I found myself disappointed when it ended and I hadn't learnt more. I wish the concept of practicing self care from the inside out was better carried out, and that the book ended with a series of actionable steps to actually start doing the internal work needed, and to keep reminding yourself of the knowledge acquired.

In my experience, speaking your truth, claiming your own wisdom, and standing in your own shoes is not enough. After years of trying to do this exactly, I have to say that whilst I'm definitely prouder of myself, I'm still very much emotionally exhausted. I feel like this book fails to tackle the pain and weariness that comes from constantly doing this and still have your needs largely ignored by others. Also, although I have gotten much better at not letting other's opinions define me or my life, the opinions do become more negative and opposing the more you express your needs. Knowing that you are good enough does not take away the frustration of others constantly telling you you are not. Standing in your own shoes does not mean there is no fatigue attached to holding yourself upright through all the blizzards that will inevitably come your way. So maybe it's just me, but all I can say is that I am still depleted and I still don't get what I need. And this book didn't make me feel like I was any closer to solving the riddle.

In conclusion, this book was a good read that in my opinion tackles the first step of becoming aware, in what is a much longer and harder journey; it tackles the "why you're depleted" part of the title. What it is missing is the guidance to actually go forward; it's missing the "how to get what you need". I hope there will be a part 2 for those of us that need a little more help.
