So happy to read Daniel's story after getting to know his character throughout the series.  Unfortunately, this was another one that rushed the ending.

An enjoyable read, but my least favorite of Ashely's MacKenzie novels.

2.5 No wicked deeds at all in this book, at least none perpetrated by our charming, kind hero Daniel. Daniel becomes immediately smitten when he's introduced to Violette, the daughter of a famous medium, especially after he discovers that she's the one who created all the mechanical workings that run the tricks behind her mother's shows. For Daniel's passion is machinery, too; he's bent on creating the fastest motor car ever. But when Daniel kisses the girl, though, she panics, bashes him on the head, and flees. Daniel, remarkably still smitten, sets Uncle Ian on Violet's trail, then follows her to Marseille and woos her through a balloon ride. The ride is far more exciting than the rest of the novel that follows, alas, a story that wanders rather aimlessly until a final showdown with a baddie from Violet's past allows the two to finally marry.

I appreciated Daniel's slow sexual wooing of Violet, given
Spoilerher past history of rape
, but in other regards he was entirely too overbearing for my tastes, constantly insisting that he'd protect Violet no matter what. And Violet is one of those heroines whom everyone says is brave and admirable, but whom we rarely see acting in anything but a passive way.

Daniel being with someone as interesting as him is all I’ve ever wanted for him.

Daniel's and Violet's story was a fun read. There was the romance but also a bit of mystery and action as is expected every time a Mackenzie is involved. Violet Deveraux's back story was sad and violent and I admired her for the strength she had dealing with her past and the consequences of that past. Daniel Mackenzie was charming, impulsive, a tad arrogant and very sweet. I liked the fact that Violet was as smart and as technology savvy as Daniel which made her the perfect woman for him. The good guys prevailed and the bad guys got what they deserved and Daniel and Violet found their happy ever after.
