I don’t know whether I just didn’t get the book but I found it confusing and the blurbs didn’t match up to what I was reading!

This book was a miss for me. It tried to establish for the whole first half that this wasn’t another one of those novels with storylines and yet in the part two that is exactly what happened. The writting also felt foreign to me and i could in no way connect to it. The thoughts in the first part were for the most part a huge miss and just a bunch of nonsense stuck together. Part two however was more readable and enjoyable.

A narrative told in little snippets of text, each a solid gut punch. If the strength of this book is how painfully plausible it is (e.g. a main character being internet famous for tweeting "Can a dog be twins?"), the brief scene where
someone's therapist tries to convince them to hate the police
significantly weakens its point.

The third person perspective and tone of the book is perfect for reflecting the experience of the internet - constantly taking in information with very little real social value apart from talking about memed with friends - however, Lockwood uses exactly the same perspective and tone when talking about reality and hard-hitting events, which diluted any emotional impact those scenes may have had on me.

I read Lockwood's essay The Communal Mind in 2020 for a class and found it very interesting so I was quite excited for this book. Once I began, I realized the first passages of the book were directly lifted from The Communal Mind.

This book is advertised as fiction everywhere, but it becomes clear during the book that Lockwood actually did go through these events to a certain extent and this book is a work of autofiction rather than pure fiction, which I believe strengthens the book.

Overall a fairly good read, but I would be more likely to recommend The Communal Mind to others than this 'novel'.

I didn't like this. A friend recommended it to me, but it really didn't live up to the recommendations. The first half is about the internet and feels very smug and self important without actually saying much. The second half had the potential to be interesting, but had nothing from part one to build on so didn't have the effect they wanted, I think. All the commentary on the internet and online culture truly made me think of the Joker saying "SoCiEtY!!" with no follow up. There were some interesting turns of phrase at time, but not enough to make the book interesting overall.
