Fucking brilliant. Unlike anything I have ever read and will probably ever read. Lockwood writes some of the most bat-shit crazy crap and I revelled in it. Despite this humour, it was also kind of unnerving in that it made me question how I'm spending my life and how other people are spending their lives and how sad and miserable all of this is. The second part ruined me, I was positively sobbing reading it. I like that this is a book that really encourages you to digest and think about what is being said and I really want to go back and read it again (I was thinking this as I was reading it - I need to reread this!).

This book broke my heart. I’m sad I had to rush through it since it is due tomorrow. What you first think is a satyrical book about the internet and the people using the internet turns in to such a tender saga about a family. TW: infant death

I listened to the audio version, which probably made the first half of the book harder to follow along. The main character is famous on Portal, a social media platform, and slowly becomes addicted. Until a family emergency pulls her back to reality.

The first half was tougher to get through, it was hit or miss with it's satirical musings on social media (the Portal), politics, and our generation's views. The second half of the book was really moving and humanizing. We switch gears to a more cohesive story, which is much more my speed.

When you stand back and look at the two writing styles it makes sense - the first half is filled with nonsensical, comment style observations (like posting in the Portal), while the second half fills the pages with emotions and images (like reality). Not my favorite book, but I appreciate the artistic style.

I first read this book in 2021, shortly after returning to work after having my first baby. I was still shaking off lockdown, very much online and only present in the real world when I was with my family. This book resonated with me. The style suited my long-covid and postpartum fogged brain. I didn't have to try to keep up with the stream of consciousness style, since one event was barely linked to the next, and I just let the beautiful, poetic language wash over me on audio. And then the second part came, and destroyed me. The language was utterly, devastatingly beautiful. Even knowing what was coming, even remembering specific parts word for word two years later, I still spent most of the second half sobbing. I absorbed a great deal more of the first half during this reading, though. It seemed more cohesive. Oddly enough, the timeline of the portal and the MC's interactions with it felt more grounded and recognizable now that I've got more distance from the events that inspired it.

Readers may also enjoy "Dept of Speculation" and "Because Internet".

I found the way it was written a little bit difficult, the content is pretty sad and is autobiographical so keep that in mind
