Swimmy

The tale of a brave, curious fish who survives an encounter with a giant tuna, Leo Lionni's Swimmy takes its readers on a hero's journey. After his siblings are devoured by a giant tuna, the one surviving fish, Swimmy, leaves his home and embarks on a journey through the wide ocean, where he encounters a number of wonders, from jellyfish to lobsters to seaweed forests. Far away, he meets more fish of his own kind, and convinces them that the beauty of the ocean is worth risking another fierce tuna. After teaching them to swim as a group, so coordinated that they look like one giant fish, Swimmy and his friends chase the tuna away and are free to enjoy the glorious ocean in peace.

This beautiful book contains illustrations of beguiling simplicity, mostly prints made from objects children would recognize. With large paintings that convey the wonders Swimmy is seeing as a small fish in a large ocean, this book presents many opportunities to engage children on the subjects of loneliness, curiosity, risk-taking and adventure. The artistic style is also one that smaller children would recognize and could try to emulate, creating pictures or even books of their own in Lionni's evocative style.

This is a great book about working as a team to overcome obstacles.

Swimmy is a story about a fish who lost his family to a giant tuna fish. The story follows the fish through his grief until he is reminded of all the beautiful things the ocean has to offer. When the fish meets a school of fish he knew he had to befriend them and tell them about all the new wonders he discovered in the ocean.
This book not only reaches out to children who have experienced loss but it also teaches the importance of friendship, teamwork, bravery, and empathy. I believe it is extremely important to reach out to the children who have gone through losses to let them know they are not alone. It is also important to instill empathy and compassion in students, which this book does beautifully. Swimmy shows the importance of bravery and teamwork which is beneficial for students to learn at a young age. It also teaches students how to find the good in every situation, and that they can accomplish everything they put their minds to.

Swimmy is a black fish living with a group of red fish. After all of the red fish are eaten he heads off to find a new place to belong. Along the way he meets different sea creatures and finally finds a place to stay. Nice messages about how being different can be valuable and the importance of teamwork. I enjoyed the authors descriptions of the sea creatures and thought them to be creative and different from any other children’s book. I also like the watercolor and stamp illustrations, would be fun to tie into an art project.

Emotion: Bravery, cooperation

A lovely fable about a small and lonely black fish with beautifully vibrant art that looks as if it’s moving like the sea itself. A (100%/Outstanding)

This is a really sweet book about teamwork told through the eyes of fishes! It will definitely tickle the hearts of your little readers and is beautifully illustrated.

Loved the illustrations. The text was alright, but simpler than I would have liked.
